Collective Fan Spotlight- Funko Collector Meghan Piro

Being that Collective POP is a sight dedicated to your fan obsessions, headlining in our own love for POPs. We decided to do a spotlight on a collector of our choosing. Meghan Piro seemed to be fitting for our first interview, since she has a rather large Funko collection reaching over 2100 POPs! Her love and obsession for POPs has become a beautiful hobby that we are excited to share with you. Not only does she have a rather large collection, but she has only been collecting for a little over a year now. Proving to us all just how fast the love of collecting can take us over. We hope you enjoy our interview with Meghan and some photos of her colossal collection. We are warning you though, the jealousy may overwhelm you!

How many POP figures do you have? How many Funko products do you have?
1427 Pop’s and 2147 Funko products

Are you an in box or out of box collector and why?
I am both. I keep and display my Pop’s in the box but have taken some out to “play” with and take pictures. The reason for in box would be room and value.

What got you into collecting POPs in the first place?
My coworker told me about them but I didn’t think anything of them until I went to Hot Topic on lunch with him one day and really looked at them.

What is your favorite POP?
My favorite Pop’s are Ghost Rider, La Muarte, Punisher, Disney, Murloc’s from World of Warcraft, Regular Show, the list goes on.

What are your rarest POPs?
My rarest Pop is my Silver Superman for being a Hot Topic employee contest.

Do you remember your very first POP? How did you feel when you got it?
I actually bought Chewbacca and Predator for my boys Easter baskets last year. They got them and were not interested so I kept them and started to accumulate. They tease me that those still belong to them but they are totally mine. I didn’t think much of the Pop’s when I bought the first two but when I went back for more I had to have them all.

What do you love most about being a collector?
I love my fellow collectors and the friends I have made in the past year. I love the hunt of finding rare ones and the feeling of happiness when I get to add a new one to the collection.

How long have you been a collector?
I have been collecting since Easter 2015.

Do you collect anything besides POPs and Funko products?
I collect figural keychains, other vinyls, tsum tsum and some random stuff. If I like the item I usually buy it.

What are you favorite fandoms to collect?
I love the Disney line and Star Wars those are the two collections I want to have every Pop of but I am very fond of all of my toys.

What are some POPs you are really hoping Funko will make?
I desperately need a Prince Pop. Many variants of him and a Pop ride with the Purple motorcycle.
Another line would be the Amazing World of Gumball, Looney Toons Pepe Le Pew, Ice Age, I have a long list.

Are there still specific POPs you want in your collection but just can’t seem to get your hands on?
I am really close to having every Disney and Star Wars Pop but the harder to find ones and older ones are very pricey so I will be saving for one at a time.

Do you have any great collecting stories?
I love when there are special events at stores and you meet and get to mingle with fellow collectors, I love when others are willing to help you out for instance when I needed the Haunted Mansion Pop’s and a fellow collector in my FB group was willing to go get them at cost plus shipping.

Any advice for newbie collectors wanting to get into the obsession?
My advise to new collectors is to be patient with new items that come out you can end up paying more than needed to get what you want. Be kind to one another and help each other out. Most importantly have fun!

The War of the Boxes- In Box Vs. Out of Box

There’s a war going on in the POP Funko universe. The war between the in box collectors and the out of box hoarders. I’m totally kidding, there is no such war and most people don’t really care how others like to maintain their obsession. But there are many people who have their own personal reasoning for keeping their POPs in or out of their original boxes. So what are the pros and cons of in box and out of box (OOB) collecting?
First let us take a look at what makes in box collecting so great and why you should consider collecting this way. In box collecting is not solely about the potential value of your favorite POP figures, it is about much more than that. Although, there is a definite plus to knowing that your potentially value increasing POPs will be in perfect condition if you ever consider selling them in the future. It is also important to consider that you may not want to keep all of these POPs in the future, especially as your collection grows larger. Knowing that you can always trade for a more desirable POP, is a comfort that in box collectors often experience. Besides the obvious pros of in box collecting, there is also my personal favorite. Some of us are just a little OCD, and in desperate needs of a gorgeous organized collection. I hate feeling like my POPs might get damaged or become flawed because I take them out of their protective little homes. I enjoy keeping my POPs are perfect as when I purchase them, snuggly settled in their flimsy little boxes. As a collector I realize the cons of collecting in box, but I also realize the pros are most definitely worth the cost.
You’ve heard the best parts of in box collecting, so what are the pros of being an out of box collector? OOB collectors often express that they enjoy collecting purely for the joys of possessing their favorite POP characters. They have no cares of concerns for the potential value of their POPs, and truly just want to enjoy the experience of collecting. There is certainly a carefree mentality to being an OOB collector, something that requires a more laid-back personality to enjoy the experience. There are also the bragging rights that OOB collectors get when they can share photos of just how amazing their POPs look. When you collect out of box, you get to experience the details and beauty that each little POP figure contains. There is nothing covering up the details of your figures, making it a rather enjoyable way to collect. As someone who has held a few of my POPs outside of their box for mere moments, I can attest to just how amazing they look outside of their cozy boxes.
There is also a third option for collectors who see the pros of both in box and out of box collecting. There are some people who enjoy keeping a collection that has both in and out of box POPs. They often display a portion of their POPs inside of their boxes, keeping them safe from outside harm. These collectors also enjoy having some of their POPs sitting outside of their boxes on the shelf. This makes for a very attractive and unique display of their collection. Keeping doubles is also an option for when you want to keep the value of your POPs but also want to enjoy what they look like outside of their boxes.
So regardless of how you like to keep your POPs stored, the important part if that you are enjoying your time collecting. There is really no better way to collect, just do whatever works best for you. Let us know what your favorite way to display your POPs is in the comments. The Chase- The Thrill of POP Hunting

As a collector there is that one magical moment when everything comes together so beautifully. You’ve been on the hunt, driving from store to store, forcing your legs to push past their exhaustion after a long day of work. You know this is crazy, searching for that one special piece that will make your day somehow brighter- but you do it anyways. Because it’s the thrill of the hunt, it’s the excitement of the chase. Non-collectors just don’t understand that feeling when your eyes lock with that one perfect POP for your collection. Your heart stops and the adrenaline rises, your hand lunges for the box before your brain can even process what is happening. The thrill and excitement you feel at that moment is truly irreplaceable. For a collector that magic moment makes all of the stressing and hunting worth it.

So maybe it isn’t quite that dramatic for every collector, but some of you understand what I mean. Finding that cute little POP that you have been dreaming of for days, is a rather exciting experience. Nothing beats being able to place that POP on your rack and display it in its full glory. We all know the thrill of the chase, what it means to go searching for that one perfect piece. So what does it mean when you are searching for a truly rare item? One that is limited edition and rather uncommon to find in the wild. Funko likes to call these beasts the “Chase” variants, and oh do they torture us with their exclusivity. These aren’t your regular run of the mill POPs- oh no my friends- these are something much more rare. The Chase POPs are even more exceptional than those store exclusive POPs that we all enjoy scavenging for. These POPs are special because they aren’t just exclusive to a specific shop, they are special because they are limited edition. Each POP has a different rarity level, some like the recent Independence Day Alien Chase is a 1:6 chance of being found. Knowing that these POPs are even harder to find than some of our favorite exclusives, makes them even more desirable. Knowing that only so many people are going to be lucky enough to snag one of these beauties, makes the thrill even more intense.
It is about much more than just finding the rarest POPs for a true collector. There is something so excited about being able to find your favorite pieces and placing them in their rightful place on your shelf. Whether it be a common you have been hoping to find, or the rarest Chase that you just NEED in your collection- we all love collecting for the pure joy of it. So stay safe out there POP hunters and good luck finding your favorites!
