4 Reasons Why Funko Pops Are NOT Like Beanie Babies

4 Reasons Why Funko Pops Are NOT Like Beanie Babies

There are many people who continuously suggest that Funko Pops are exactly like Beanie Babies. While Beanie Babies were quite the craze in their day, they did not last all that long before becoming a forgettable fad. While there are certain similarities within how popular each collectible became, there are quite a few reasons why they aren’t at all the same. You can always find similarities within whatever popular craze is the current hot thing, but that doesn’t mean these things are really all that alike. Funko Pops are different from Beanie Babies for many reasons. While many people could argue against this point, I am here to explain to you why Funko Pops are not like Beanie Babies.

They Are Modeled After Pop Culture Characters

While Beanie Babies have recently begun creating more pop culture designs, their initial popularity was simply based on stuffed animals. Yes, Beanie Babies are still a thing and they really aren’t doing all that bad. They aren’t at the insane height of their popularity like they were some time ago, but they aren’t completely dead. What makes Funko Pops so much more capable of withstanding the fad phase, is the fact that they are initially modeled after pop culture character. They range from video game characters, to movie characters and all the way to our favorite cartoon Disney characters.

Funko Pops are not simply different zoo animals in cute fluffy little designs, instead they are designed to reach a larger audience. Funko Pops often bring in fans who weren’t initially collectors, simply because they want the cute little figure of their favorite character, actor or musician. This really creates a much larger fanbase, with some people who only purchase their absolute favorites instead of becoming avid collectors. The obsession is something that can continue to maintain value, simply for the fact that they have licenses with some of the most popular franchises. There are certainly franchises that will never die down, things like Disney and Star Wars have been around for a very long time and will continue to maintain that classic appeal for many years to come. Because of their connection with these incredible shows and movies, Funko can continue to draw in new fans without much effort on their part. Some people simply want to get as much merchandise for their favorite shows and movies as they possible can, and this is where Funko can sneak into their shelves. While this might not be enough to maintain Pops forever, it is certainly enough to disconnect them from the unfair Beanie Baby reference. There is something to be said about a collectible that can branch out and reach a larger group of fans who want more than just a stuffed animal.

Funko Knows How to Market

Funko is pretty great at hyping up their products in order to keep the excitement going. When things seem a bit dull, they come out with a fresh new line that everyone has been anticipating. They are also good at keeping rarity to certain Pops, or at least the illusion of rarity. Having Chase pops makes people more hyped and excited when they find something that not everyone else has. This continues to bring fans in and keeps them wanting to find the harder to acquire items, instead of always having something readily available to them. Trying to release limited edition items helps to keep the craze going strong, without having people feel like they are obtaining valueless items.

Funko also is connected with popular conventions like SDCC, NYCC and ECCC. Being connected with the comic conventions bring a whole new level of excitement to collecting Pops. These exclusive items become rare and extremely desirable to fans, and continues to keep the Pops out there and in the limelight. These sort of connections are what continues to make Funko a popular brand, and let’s face it Beanie Babies aren’t releasing limited edition stuffed toys specially made for conventions and comic book stores.

They Continue to Branch Out

While Funko has their popular Pops, they also have plenty of other items that they continue to branch out with. Funko has mystery minis, dorbz, and even keychains! They continue to try new things in order to bring in new customers, instead of just remaining stagnant. They don’t plan to just rest on what they have, which helps maintain a sense of demand for their branc.

Funko also continues to branch out with their Pop lines, recently releasing Pop Movie Moments. They will have a Pop that represents a specific moment from a film, with backgrounds and different props including in this design. This is just another factor that helps Funko keep their customers excited and anticipating what they will come up with next. They aren’t afraid to try new things, which helps keep their brand fresh instead of just the same old thing over and over again.

The Possibilities Are Endless

The great thing is with all of the different licensing opportunities Funko can continue to branch out and reach new customers. There are so many different Pop culture ideas that they can connect with, which gives them plenty of room for growth. Without much room for change they would likely become a fad like Beanie Babies, but Funko is well aware of how to continue to grow and move forward with their brand. Comparing them is like comparing Apples and Oranges, since Pops aren’t just stuffed toys but memorabilia which connects fans to their favorite past times. Being able to bring back memories and connect people with happier times in their lives, is a big reason why Funko Pops are nothing like Beanie Babies.

While I don’t predict that Pops will last forever, they certainly have much more staying power than a simple fad. They have a lot more brains and creativity backing them, and plenty of room for growth. Funko Pops are great collectibles which continue to bring fans together and connect them with some of their absolute favorite pop culture themes.

How to Get Your Hands on Chase Funko Pops

How to Get Your Hands on Chase Funko Pops

While it isn’t impossible to give you directions on how to definitely score a chase Pop, there are plenty of tips to help you get a little bit closer. Chase pops are difficult to find because there are only so many of them released, and everyone wants to snag them. Usually a chase will be a variant of an already existing Pop, sometimes they glow in the dark and other times they have a feature that makes it very different from the original Pop. Many people become frustrated as collectors, just hoping to one day get their hands on that illusive chase Pop, but there are ways to improve your chances and get closer to a score. As someone who has personally found 4 chases in the wild, I can certainly attest to their availability. Wild chases are real people, even though it might seem like an impossible score.

Get Friendly with the Employees

It’s always beneficial to get to know your local employees, since they can give you insider information. From my personal experience you can meet some really friendly workers who don’t mind assisting their customers when it comes to figuring out when their Pops arrive. Obviously being a nice and friendly human being is always a good choice, but sometimes getting to know your store employees can really be helpful when it comes to scoring the Pops you really want. This is especially helpful if you are aware of their release dates and can get to know when the most likely arrival in your local stores will be.

While many people complain about workers who simply want to purchase the Pops themselves, this isn’t always the case. Getting to know them can help you figure out who simply wants the items for themselves, versus someone who is just doing their job.

Track the Shipments

One of the absolute best ways to get your hands on a chase Pop is to be aware of when the shipments arrive in your area. They usually move through in a pattern, the west coast receiving their Pops first in most cases. You can always check in with your store employees and ask them what days their shipments usually arrive. Some stores like Target put out their stock first thing in the morning, so you can always check in right away before anyone else arrives and ask the employee if they received any Pops that day. This is honestly one of the best ways to score a chase Pop, even though it can sometimes be competitive.

You might have to deal with other collectors who can be a bit pushy when they are trying to score a Pop they want. Even though it can have certain frustrating aspects, this is often the most effective way to get the collectible you really want. It is often the only way to get them if you live in an area with a lot of other collectors. The competitive aspect is challenging at times, but you certainly can get your hands on a good chase if you are willing to work a little harder.

The Early Bird Gets the Worm

As much as it can be challenging for people who have jobs and other things to tend to, sometimes being there first is really the only way to get a chase. If you know that a shipment is arriving on a certain day then you need to get up early and arrive when the store opens its doors. It seems a bit intense but it is really rewarding to be able to score a Pop that you really want. When you see that gorgeous chase sticker shinning on the front of the box, it feels a bit surreal. Sometimes the only way to get what you want is to be there before anyone else.

Look Closely

Sometimes people hide Pops, so you might have to look thoroughly. Checking behind the shelves and in odd places can wind up leading you to a hidden chase. If someone caught it but couldn’t quite afford it, they might have decided to hide it in the oddest location. Searching thoroughly through the Pop sections and even some places nearby, can sometimes be beneficial. Make sure not to just skip through the shelves, because honestly it isn’t always easy to recognize the difference in stickers. It seems like they would stand out drastically, but in the sea of other exclusive stickers it can sometimes be easy to miss. Make sure to be thorough and eventually you will get lucky.

Don’t Give Up!

It sounds ridiculous but you just can’t give up! It can start to feel like you will never find a chase Pop without having to pay the flipper prices, but you just have to keep at it. Keep searching and continue to monitor those releases and eventually you will score the chase you really want. Sometimes this happens when you least expect it, which can make the experience even more exciting. You have to keep pushing through the disappointment and eventually you will discover your first wild chase Pop. Sometimes it takes years of collecting, but it is certainly worth the thrill of seeing the chase on the shelf and being able to get your hands on it. Sometimes it takes searching to different stores, but sometimes it just requires a little extra effort to find the chase you have been looking for.

It really does start to feel hopeless when you see other people scoring the chase Pops that you wanted. We often feel like we aren’t lucky enough to get the score, but eventually it happens and it is completely worth it. Using some of these tips can really be helpful when it comes to chase hunting and Pop hunting in general!

What is Disneybounding? Why This Popular Trend is So Great For Disney Fans

What is Disneybounding? Why This Popular Trend is So Great For Disney Fans

You’ve probably heard it mentioned once or twice, but maybe you were too embarrassed to ask exactly what it meant. Many Disney fans take part in this activity at the parks, or simply for a fun day to day challenge. In most situations though it is a way to dress as your favorite character without breaking any rules at the Parks. Here is your chance to get the low down on Disneybounding and catch a glimpse of some great ways to take part in this awesome trend yourself.

What Exactly is DIsneybounding?

Essentially Disneybounding is dressing up as your favorite Disney characters but with a more casual and contemporary twist. It can be as subtle as you would like, but some looks can get rather detailed. Fans simply put together an outfit, sometimes of items they find already in their closet, and attempt to make it look like one of their favorite characters. This can be a super casual way to get into the Disney spirit, without doing full on cosplay. Another great advantage to Disneybounding is that the more casual theme allows you access into the Disney Parks. See…at Disney you cannot dress up like the Disney characters, since that takes away from the magic of the park itself. They only want the actual characters walking around dressed up, so this does not confuse or take away from the children’s experience (and let’s face it the adult experience as well). With Disneybounding you aren’t breaking any rules, since your outfit is simply inspired by your Disney character. It can be casual enough that you slip by without being called into question for dressing up too far.

Some fans enjoy being able to plan out a Disneybound outfit for every day that they are on their Disney vacation. This is a great place to sport your Disney Minnie Mouse Ears as well, since they can add a little flair and theme to your look. Some of the ears actually are themed to specific characters, so it can really add something to the style. Many people enjoy being able to pull together a look from items they already own, and it gives the experience more of a laid back feel. Others will go all out and try to really make their Disneybound look feel more like a costume, without actually taking it across that line.

Many celebrities even take part in the Disneybounding excitement, and enjoy being able to feel like a modern version of their favorite characters. It is certainly something that was originally created as a way to get around the Disney rule of no costumes, while still following the rules itself, but now it has been taken to a whole new level. Many fans enjoy being able to go Disneybound during their daily lives, just to bring a little Disney magic into their day.

Disneybounding Tips!

The idea is to keep it simple, but add just enough personal touch that it really feels like the character you are looking for. The colors are definitely an important thing to consider when it comes to Disneybounding. Once you settle on a character pick out the signature color tones that represent them and really remind you of their look. With a character like Belle you want to pick out her signature blue and white dress, or go with her golden yellow ball gown look. Either way you want to consider the colors in their wardrobe in order to bring recognition to your style. A few personal touches really help when it comes to adding accessories, and you might want to consider adding a purse that sort of pulls everything together. There are plenty of gorgeous purse designs out there that clearly signify the character you are trying to emulate. With the right finale accessory like maybe some book earrings for belle? Or some candelabras? Try to think about the details that would make someone stand back and notice what you are going for.

Get Creative!

Some people think that you need to stick to the ordinary Princesses or Princes, but there are so many options when you are going Disneybound! The fun part of it is that you can try out an unlikely character, since you are really just emulating their look and not going for exact cosplay. You can take a character like Pluto and make your look match his by simply using the right color scheme and some fun bone accessories! There really aren’t many rules when it comes to Disneybounding, which gives fans a chance to see another side of these characters and really bring them to life in a fun spirited way.

Whether you are a purist who wants to snag an old school system, or simply someone who wants to remember the classic games- you have your options. There was recently a release of the Super NES Classic, which has the look of the original console but much smaller and is preloaded with 21 of your favorite games. Personally I prefer to actual old school console with the physical cartridges, but to each their own. Purchasing an old school system can become a bit pricey, especially when it comes to finding your favorite games from sellers online.

Tamagotchi

Apparently this is still thing and even becoming popular once again. While it might not bring you the warm and fuzzies, it certainly is a major reminder of the 90’s. So now you can purchase a Tamogotchi once again and forget about it until months later when you mourn the death of your sad little creature that you completely neglected. RIP.

Pokemon Go

Sure the fad seems to have died down quite a bit since it initial release, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t enjoyable for a little reminiscing. It is definitely a modernized way to experience your favorite Pokemon, and let’s face it kids have it so much different these days. While you can enjoy the electronic age of Pokemon Go, you can also go back to the old school collecting days. Unfortunately a lot of the newly released Pokemon can leave us 90’s kids feeling less nostalgic and a bit well…old.

Reboots

While some of these reboots can leave you feeling more depressed than actually excited, some are a great way to relive your childhood. DuckTales is one of the reboots that actually seems to have done an impressive job bringing back our childhood with a new flare to it.

Rocko’s Modern Life Static Cling- Fans of this amazingly original and lovable cartoon are getting a made for tv special sometime this year! I know this is one I am more than a little bit excited for, and here’s to hoping they do it justice.

Hey Arnold! Also received a nostalgic movie special reboot, for any fans of the football shaped kiddo. It is definitely exciting to see some of childhood favorites being rebooted if even for a short time.

Fashion

Let’s face it, anyone who grew up in the 90’s is highly aware that many of these trends are coming back into style. We scoff at the youngins trying to do these styles justice, and remember that we did it first. Every trend finds its way back into the limelight, but now it seems many 90’s fashion statements are making their way into the mainstream, and it is certainly enough to make any 90’s kid feel nostalgic for the days of mood rings and butterfly clips.

While these can’t entirely bring back the glory days, they can give you a fresh reminder of those simpler times. The 90’s were a great time for kids to grow up, and certainly created a generation of unique souls. It seems so many of those trends are coming back full swing into popularity, and it pleases many of the 90’s kids who grew up with all of these amazing things.

The Rarest and Most Expensive Super Nintendo (SNES) Games

The Rarest and Most Expensive Super Nintendo (SNES) Games

It’s no secret that retro gaming has come back full swing, and everyone is waxing a bit nostalgic. It seems many of us who played Super Nintendo or original Nintendo, are not eager to get our hands on a bit of the past. Maybe it has something to do with stressful times, or simply the dissonant feeling of growing older- but many of us are feeling more nostalgic these days. We want to regain some memories of simpler times, and sitting at home after school playing your favorite Nintendo games, is certainly a positive memory. Since many people are feeling drawn to these retro games, the prices of some have really skyrocketed. The more rare and hard to acquire games have seen a real boom in price, while some have just gone up due to popularity. Since the excitement has reached a new level of hype, it seems most collectors and classic fans will be wanting to get their hands on an old school console. We decided to share a list of some of the most expensive and incredibly valuable Super Nintendo games on the market right now.

Nintendo Powerfest 1994

While I am not eager to fill this list with games like this, it certainly deserves a mention simply for the incredibly high value and rarity that it possesses. Powerfest 1994 was a national video game competition and this gaming cartridge was created specifically for the event with three games on it. This specific game cartridge is said to possess only one or two left in existence, sine the rest were destroyed by Nintendo after the event itself. It was sold to a collector for $10,000, but being that there is only one or two left, the market is controlled by the seller. This means the value could ultimately be pretty priceless, making it one of the most valuable pieces on this list.

Donkey Kong Country Competition Cartridge

Another game released for an in store competition, this one was released for Blockbuster. This game has 8 levels and only allows for 5 minutes of gameplay before scores are read. It sells for somewhere over $600 and is said to have 2,500 copies made.

StarFox Super Weekend Competition Cartridge

This was specifically made for a Nintendo competition and released in toy stores and is basically a sampler of the game. It was released with somewhere under 2,000 copies which is why it is so valuable. This is obviously more valuable for collectors, being that it allows for 4 minutes of gameplay. It sells for around $400 online, making it solely for the purpose of collectors who want this piece for appearance more than anything else.

Aero Fighters

This game was originally an arcade game, which caused less of them to be released when made for SNES. It can sell for over $700 online, and is somewhat difficult to come by. It certainly has continued to shoot up in price and will likely continue climbing with the boom in interest.

Cool World

Modeled after the movie, this game has continued to increase in value. It seems to sell for upwards of $300-$500 online, and continues to be a difficult one to snag at any reasonable price. While many people argue it isn’t the best game, it certainly is one of the rarest.

Harvest Moon

The original Harvest Moon was created as a farming and herding game, and is now a somewhat valuable piece. A major reason why this game has climbed in price, is because it was initially not that wanted back in the day. People didn’t seem all that interested in its original release, which allowed for less copies made, now causing the game to increase quite a bit in price. It sells for upwards of $200 online, and is actually somewhat difficult to come by even at those prices.

Mega Man 7

Since this game seemed to go relatively unnoticed during its release, Mega Man 7 is now a coveted and hard to find game. Selling for hundreds of dollars online, it is one that many Mega Man fans want to get their hands on for their collection.

Earthbound

Earthbound is a classic RPG game with many followers who are head over heels for it’s funny gameplay. While it isn’t well known it sells for over $100 to those who can get their hands on it. Unfortunately for anyone interested in purchasing this game, it can be rather hard to find even from resellers online.

E.V.O Search for Eden

While it wasn’t something people were all that excited about during release, it is a game that retro gamers are highly interested in now. Since it wasn’t as popular when it released in ’93, the game had less copies made thus making it highly valuable now. Selling for over $200 online, this game has the player create a creature and then play through the history of the Earth going through the geological periods as you level up your character.

Top 10 Rarest and Most Expensive Disney Plush Designs

Top 10 Rarest and Most Expensive Disney Plush Designs

Any Disney fan who enjoys collecting the Disney Plush dolls, realizes that some can be challenging to acquire. The ones that are retired become more and more expensive as time goes on, making it hard to keep your collections complete. Each Disney plush is made with incredible details and high quality materials, which is why they are hard to beat. You can often tell the difference between the original Disney plush and a knock-off version, since they simply lack the quality that Disney has. Of course many people purchase them for their children, others do enjoy collecting for themselves.  New Disney plush dolls can sell from $10-$40 depending on the size and design, so they aren’t too hard to obtain. Disney also runs plenty of sales which can make grabbing your favorites rather easy. While the new ones might be obtainable for collectors, some of the retired deigns are nearly impossible to get your hands on. The more desirable the higher the price goes, and so we decided to make a list of some of the most expensive Disney plush dolls and animals.

Jumbo Mufasa Plush

Many of the rarest and highest prices Disney plush dolls are older items from the Lion King. The oversized Mufasa plush sells for around $800 online now, since it is retired and difficult to get your hands on. It is truly a beautiful piece, but certainly not easy for fans to acquire. While prices can range and sometimes you can snag them at great deals, most of the time the older Mufasa will sell for quite the large sum.

Maleficent 38 Inch Plush

This gorgeous Maleficent Dragon from Sleeping Beauty does not sell for regular retail value. Not only is she oversized and incredibly detailed, she is also rather rare. The peace can sell for a couple hundred dollars depending on where it is found, and is certainly difficult to acquire. Anyone who loves Sleeping Beauty will want to get their hands on this gorgeous jumbo plush, but might find the task a bit difficult. She has incredible details and a soft plushy feel, which makes her quite the site.

Kiara and Kovu

Kiara and Kovu are the beloved characters from the Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride, and are nearly impossible to get your hands on without spending a lot of extra cash. They are beautifully designed and incredibly rare, without any local stores having them in possession. You will have to search the internet to purchase these gorgeous Disney plush figures, and will likely end up only finding them available for a few hundred dollars.

Simba and Nala

Simba and Nala are certainly available at retail price, since the Disney store continues to release new versions of them. While the new versions are easier to come by, some of the older plush versions are rather rare. The older Simba and Nala stuffed animals are rather expensive, but the detail and unique classic look do make them rather desirable.

Scar and Hyenas

While many other Lion King plush figures are hard to come by, Scar and the Hyenas are some of the rarest. Scar isn’t easy to get your hands on, but if you are willing to pay the extra dollars then you can score this gorgeously detailed item. Scar and his Hyenas usually sell for a couple hundred, sometimes cheaper if you are willing to wait around for a great deal.

Lady and the Tramp Peg

While Disney has released new versions of the the Lady and the Tramp plush animals, the older ones can be extremely valuable! The new Lady and the Tramp are certainly gorgeous and detailed, but the older ones are classic and hard to come by. They also released Peg a while back, and she seems to be one of the hardest items to come by. She can sell online for a few hundred dollars, and has become one of the more rare Disney plush figures.

Aristocats

Aristocats is certainly a beloved Disney film, and some of the collectible items are extremely valuable. Some of the older versions of Thomas O’Malley and the lovely Duchess can sell for a hundreds of dollars online! They currently only have a new version of Marie released at the Disney store, so the rest of her family can certainly be hard to come by. The fact that Disney doesn’t have any new releases of the Aristocats (besides Marie) makes them incredibly desirable, and relatively expensive.

Prince John

Prince John from Robin Hood is actually a difficult plush to come by. While Robin Hood and the lovely Maid Marian can be found on the Disney website, some of the other pieces aren’t so readily available. This particular version of Prince John is rare and can sell for over a hundred dollars, which is rather pricey since the original value is only $20.

Princess Tiger Lily

Tiger Lily from Peter Pan is a beautifully designed plush doll, and is actually rather rare. Many of the Peter Pan plush dolls are difficult to acquire, especially the older releases. Tiger Lilly in particular is challenging to find anywhere, so that means taking to online third party sellers to acquire her.

Mickey Memories

These items are actually brand new, which makes it rather surprising that they made it onto our list. The Mickey Memories plush can also be purchase with a pin and a mug, as a special limited edition monthly release. They are still currently coming out through this year (2018) and some of these are selling for rather high prices! Steamboat Willie seems to be selling for a couple hundred dollars, which is well over the original retail value. The fact that they are limited edition and only sold for the month they were released, has made these items rather valuable and hard to come by.
