Full List of Upcoming and Released Live Action Disney Remakes

As Disney fans it can be both bitter and sweet to experience the announcement of a new live action remake. Disney has been on a role recently coming out with these “real” adaptations of some of our favorite animated films. When you love an animated Disney film it can be exciting to know that it will be made into a live action version, but sometimes the disappointment can make it a bit more complicated than that. Seeing your favorite film turned into something that just doesn’t seem to capture the same essence, can be quite the letdown. At the same time these films can often be enjoyed in an entirely different way, especially when the adaptations seems to remain true to what you loved so much about the original.

With Disney releasing all of these live action films, it seems it has continued to spur more and more releases. Here is a list of the previous remakes, along with the ones currently in progress and announced for the future. Be warned the previous release descriptions might contain slight spoilers, but nothing major.

Alice in Wonderland

The Alice in Wonderland live action remake also released a sequel, both rather impressive adaptations. They feature the incredible Johnny Depp, along with a few other well-known faces. They follow along with the storyline and definitely give plenty of creativity along the way to keep fans happy. While it might not feel quite the same, it definitely does an excellent job of creating that whimsical feel.

Maleficent

Maleficent follows a rather different story than the animated version of Sleeping Beauty. Instead of following the story of Aurora while leaving the villain in the background, this story features Maleficent as more of the protagonist. It shows what made her so angry, and ultimately shows a bond growing between herself and Aurora throughout this enchanting and unique story. It is a bit darker, but at the same time still has that magical Disney feel to it that makes us all adore the animated stories.

Cinderella

A true to the original Disney film, Cinderella is a beautiful retelling of the animated version. It follows Ella and her tragic past, and the casting was simply perfection. With a wonderful moral, “have courage and be kind,” given to Cinderella from her mother. It is definitely a remake that follow the original, while adding more depth and complexities to the storyline.

The Jungle Book

The Jungle Book is definitely an interested choice of film to remake, being that many of the characters still have to be added in with special effects. While it seems unusual, the adaptation definitely captured everything in an extremely realistic and beautiful way. The imagery is incredible in this film, following along some of our favorite characters like Mowgli, Baloo and Bagheera. We also get more depth and intrigue with Shere Kahn, helping us to gain some perspective on his hatred towards man.

Beauty and the Beast

This adaption of Beauty and the Beast features our favorite little spellbinding Hermione, Emma Watson in the role of Belle. It has a unique way of bringing the Beast to life and does certainly follow certain aspects of the original film, but at the same time it does take us down a different path. There are many added scenes which show more about Belle’s past and give us a closer look at her childhood. While this film was not my personal favorite remake, it definitely went over well with many fans and certainly had a lot of effort put into it.

Christopher Robin

The film Christopher Robin is more of a sequel to the classic Winnie the Pooh, and definitely has fans eager to dive right in. A teaser was recently released, and shows Christopher Robin as a working classic man, who seems to be feeling a bit worn out. Just when things seem a bit bleak for Christopher Robin, his old pal Pooh from the hundred acre woods comes to pay him a visit. This definitely has my hopes up for an amazing story that will likely be incredibly touching.

Aladdin

The live-action adaption of Aladdin is definitely the remake of a classic film that many fans are eager to see. It is set to release May, 2019 and is also said to be a musical. Some of the live-action versions remove the music, while this one has chosen to keep it in tact. The casting has some fans excited, and others a bit disappointment, but all around a lot of work and talent is being poured into this film.

The Lion King

Most likely this version will feature a lot of CGI and will once again obtain voice actors for the roles of the characters. It is certainly an anticipated film seeing as the original was one of the most successful animated films of all time.

Mulan

While the live-action version of Mulan is said to have removed the musical aspect, it seems to have taken a more intense and serious role. The casting also is going to be mostly ethnically accurate, which leaves many fans of the original rather pleased.

Lady and the Tramp

The Lady and the Tramp live action remake is said to be released as an exclusive to Disney’s new streaming service, along with many other original shows and films. It is certainly an exciting release for fans of the classic film, and we are just awaiting more details!

The Little Mermaid

There are various adaptations of the Little Mermaid being released, but Disney is definitely beginning talks about doing one. While this story will be adapted by various creators, of course Disney fans are more excited about the one by our favorite movie-makers. There is little known about the film since it is in the very early stages of discussions and planning.

Sword in the Stone

Another announcement made recently, the Sword in the Stone is said to be an exclusive to Disney’s streaming service which will be up and running in 2019.

Chip N Dale

These rescue rangers are said to be receiving a CGI live action remake as well, although little has been said about the release.

Peter Pan

While this remake has just been announced, it is said the writers are still working on completing the script.

Pinocchio

Another exciting announcement for Disney fans, this live action adaption has little known about it just yet.

Cruella

This will be another live-action remake that focuses on the villain, instead of the good-guys. Some talks have suggested that Emma Stone might just be the one to portray the fashion obsessed villain.

Tinker Bell

While we are receiving a live-action remake of Peter Pan, fans will also be excited to hear of this live-action story featuring our favorite sassy little fairy. Tink is definitely beloved by many Disney fans for her spunk and adorableness.

Dumbo

The life action adaptation of this amazing classic was announced at the D23 Expo, but little is known besides the fact that Tim Burton will be the director. This is definitely something that appears to be an unusually pairing, but when you look at the way he adapted Alice in Wonderland, it makes perfect sense! Dumbo always had a bit of a whimsical feel, and Burton will be able to capture that superbly.
